LEFT BEHIND DEMO
Left Behind(Spring Awakening)
time spent learning this song 1 week
I chose this song because my chords are feeling a bit stressed and i just wanted an smooth song to do. I really loved this song and I had access to it so I chose this one.
Listening to myself on the recording has become a much more pleasant experience than before the challenge started because i improved tremendously over the challenge and/or i have a ton more confidence in myself than I have had in the past.
one thing i did notice though is i went flat quite often. and the "Things" was just really unpleasant, but i found that on the last one i found a spot for it that didn't sound as bad as before. also I was off beat several times with the back track. I didn't practice that much with the karaoke track and i should have. woops!
Thanks for listening

it is the day before the big day. I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone in my support group. I don't think i have ever given them credit on my blog but they have all been equally inspirational and supportive. My best friend Jill, my trainer and good friend Consuelo, My voice teacher Sandy, and my mom and my dad. Thank you to all of you. I could not have come this far if it weren't for your encouragement and your strength. thanks a bunch!!!!!
I would also like to give an extra special thanks to Kurt.
the evil mastermind behind this challenge and the reason the ten of us have grown so much in a MONTH!!!!
good god it seemed like a life time but we did it everyone!

My live performance

Marshall performing arts academy
What i enjoyed most was just really going into this. this is the first time i sang in front of people with this strange thing called confidence! i really just came out and did my thing and nothing could bring me down because i was doing what i love.
The most challenging thing about this performance is that we were facing mirrors and it really just through my focus off. I didn't know where to look and it really sucked! lolz
This performance was really a great thing for both me and the group. we all were really able to come together and i really do notice my own growth and how much other people have grown. I am really grateful for this opportunity!

This time I wen't with my dad (I have got to get my social life in order...) anyway we packaged bread today. daily singing 1/17/11
Technique:
classical warm ups and pop warm ups
(20 min)
Repertoire:
Wake me up when september ends(american idiot)
Walk like a man(jersey boys)
(35 min)
Success:
The jersey boys falsetto is actually coming along nicely since i've worked with Kurt!
Areas for improvement:
I didn't feel like I improved much with september. I was trying to take Kurt's instructions on that into consideration, but I don't feel it sounds very good, just because i feel weird throwing out all technique.

Daily singing 1/16/11
Technique:
Classical warm ups and "pop" warm ups
(30 min)
Repertoire:
Maria (west side story)
I'm Alive (next to normal)
(33min)
success:
Maria is on of my favorite songs to sing, it just fits so well and is so comfortable yet flaunty with the high b flat. I love to revisit this one to keep it fresh
areas for improvement:
this time around I practiced doing a classical song and then a pop song and then i switched it to see how well I could transition between the two styles immediately. It worked well going from classical to pop, but I couldn't manage to get that good dark classical feeling right away the second time around when I went from pop to classical.
Notes:
I think this was good to practice. I'm really afraid to loose either my classical style or my pop, but i would love to spend equal time on each because I love them both. I feel if I do practice this more often I can get it to a smooth flawless transition

Technique:
Classical warm ups that Kurt taught me
(20 min)
Repertoire:
Maria(West side story)
(30 min)
Success:
I prepared well for the audition I had right after
Areas for improvement:
I coudnt find the right place to put the high b flat at the end of maria, it really hurt even though higher notes were easier
Notes:
Although the practice for the audition was rough, the audition was very successful.

Technique:
Classical warm ups with Sandy
35 min
Repertoire:
You are love(Show Boat)
I'm Alive (Next to Normal)
Later (A Little Night Music)
30 min
Success:
I was really able to work these songs with proper rythm and timing.
Areas for Improvement:
I had been working pop songs so much lately that it was really a struggle to get the right sound and feeling in the classical show boat stuff.
Notes:
I had two voice lessons today so I'm counting one of them as a daily singing... unfortunately the pictures i took for the first didn't take and I forgot to get one with Kurt... I'll figure something out

Technique:
The usual warm ups, usher woos and jc chasez riff
(24 min)
Repertoire:
Walk like a man (jersey boys)
Extraordinary girl(american idiot)
(30 min)
Success:
I focused a lot on technique today, and using the sort of "Irish vowels" on the higher notes that Kurt was talking about a while ago.
Areas for improvement:
The jersey boys is killing me. I can't get the right sound i'm looking for and I don't know how to accomplish it...
Notes:
working with Kurt tomorrow will help me a lot. I've got a few things i need to work on with him that I can't work with Sandy. Two voice lessons tomorrow... YIKES!!!

"God I Hope I Get IT!!!"
So an eye opener today as I talked with Kurt. Two people have been eliminated and were not even half way through! Kurt talked a lot about taking the initiative and being accountable for myself. He was talking about the fact that this great big network of friends and personal supporters aren't going to be in New York with me. so its time to start making things happen for myself, which sometimes I have a problem believing that I can do. but I've already started! in this challenge i have already grown so much! I can notice it in my voice, in my performance and in my own self confidence. It's odd but I really am coming into my own. I'm not all gloom and doom like i usually am. I went to the doctors on monday and when the nurse weighed me...well the result wasn't good, but usually seeing that type of thing sends me over the edge, but i didn't! I really am starting to see my own potential and looking at myself with more pride. It's certainly a good step forward!
Daily singing 1/12/11
Technique:
The usual vocalizations and warm ups, and jc chasez riff
(15 min)
Repertoire:
Lost in the wilderness (children of eden)
I'm alive (next to normal)
Later(a little night music)
(30 min)
Success:
today was all about warming up for the performance today, I was really trying to practice what i was going to do at Albuquerque Grand today. so I accomplished what i needed
Areas for improvement:
I spent most of my time trying to perfect the wail in lost and alot of the higher stuff in im alive, but I dont think much of that work translated into the performance itself. I hope it did but i didn't really pay attention to my technique, i was just in the moment but i hope that those things went like i practiced.

Daily singing 1/11/11
Technique:
usual warm ups (extended edition!) and usher woos!
also i sang that jc chasez riff that Kurt taught me.
(20 min)
Repertoire:
I'm Alive(next to normal)
Extraordinary Girl (american idiot)
Walk like a man(jersey boys)
(40 min)
Success:
I was able to accomplish alot today because I had more time, which makes me happy, and I'm getting more confident in my "head voice"
areas for improvement:
In walk like a man, the initial woos are really hard. I'm gonna have to have kurt help me with them. I can hit the notes I just can't figure out how to make them sound like the guy on the recording. it needs to be lighter yet somehow louder....idk
Notes:
I like having so much time. also I'm not used to singing so often and I feel like my voice is getting alot stronger, even though I am getting sicker....:/

Dance/personal fitness (Yoga)
1/10/11-4:45pm
Yoga
Difficulty Level - Beginner
Studio and Instructor (Include Photo) –absolute results gym-Ingrid
What did you most enjoy? – I LOVED the way I felt afterwards, I got good workout and I felt very calm and energized afterwards
What did you find challenging and why? – I carry a lot of tension in my legs and much of the stretching had to do with the calfs and thighs so it was hard to get through that.
Observations –I feel this will help alot with relieving stress and getting me back into a good exercise routine
Private lesson 1/10/11(1)
1/10/11-10:00AM
Instructor -Sandra Neel
Minutes- 60
Repertoire - You are love(show boat), Later(a Little NIght Music),
I'm Alive(Next to Normal)
Points covered –
We went worked a lot on the passagio, and getting through it without going into the nose. I have been working these songs for a while so most of this session was fine tuning
Notes
I found that going through my passagio is a TON easier when singing more "Poppy" I would like to find a way to apply what I've been learning with Kurt into the more operatic work i do with Sandy

Usual warm ups. and usher woos!
(15 min)
Repertoire:
Lost in the wilderness (children of Eden)
Wake me up when september ends(american idiot)
(25 min)
Success:
Lost in the wilderness is coming along great again. I really love this song for my voice and it's just the right amount of challenging for a good audition piece.
Areas for improvement:
I'm still not sure what to do with the american idiot repertoire. I'm hoping to work with Kurt sometime this week and develop some sort of standing with it. but I LOVE the music
Notes:
I wasn't sure if on the days we had lessons we had to sing on our own still so i did any way

Technique:
Usual warm ups and vocalizing.
usher woos up to high f
(15 min)
Repertoire:
Lost In the wilderness (Children of Eden)
You Are Love (Show Boat)
(40 min)
Success:
There is an improve wail in Lost that I've been having trouble getting down that I really nailed today
Areas for improvement:
I recorded myself singing a little and I just was not happy with the sound of my own voice. I'm not sure if its just over criticism or what but my voice just sounds fat and It just makes me sad... I hope I get over this or my voice sounds different when I finally loose weight...

Daily Singing 1/8/11
Technique:
Usual warm ups and vocalization (10 min)
Repertoire:
Later (A Little Night Music)
Extraordinary Girl(American Idiot)
(30 min)
Success:
I'm getting very comfortable trying new things in Later. I'm becoming more able to create a character as i sing instead of just singing the song which I believe is where I was falling short in the past. Extraordinary girl is coming along well.
Areas for improvement:
Whenever I really do well in acting a song, i don't know what it is, if I just let all my technique fly out the window or what but i get like a scratchy feeling in the throat, so the performance is good but I feel like I didn't sing it well.
Notes:
I've been looking up different artists on Youtube to compare performances, i feel this is helpful.

Daily Singing 1/7/11
Technique:
warm ups etc. (14 min.)
Repertoire:
Extraordinary girl (American Idiot)
You are love (Show Boat)
(35 min)
Success:
I havent sung you are love for about a year and a half. It was really great to see how my voice has matured and strengthened in that amount of time. I also worked on a "Punk" voice for Extraordinary girl/
Areas for Improvement:
I'm still not certain what direction to take Extraordinary girl in. Its good for my voice, and not challenging at all but I don't know where to go with it...
Notes:
I really love Extraordinary girl. I'll probably do that for my new song, unless otherwise advised.

"Everything Else Goes Away"
January 7...back in Albuquerque. New York was an unbelievable week of inspiration and hope. I wish it didn't have to end. In 5 and a half days I managed to see 6 shows in this order:
Saturday:A Little Night Music
Monday:Promises, Promises and American Idiot
Tuesday: Next to Normal
Wednesday: The Adams Family
Thursday: La Cage Aux Folles
I had the honor of seeing so many of my heroes! I mean WHAT A TRIP!! I saw Bernadette Peters, Molly Shannon, Nathan Lane, Billy Joe Armstrong, Kelsey Grammar, Sean Hays and KRISTEN CHENOWETH!!! I Never imagined I would be able to see/meet one of the very people who Inspired me to start singing in the first place.
But the highlight of my own personal experience was Next to Normal. The show was AMAZNG and the actors phenomenal, but I have to admit this wasn't why I Loved seeing this show. I have been working the song I'm alive since Kurt's last visit, and I have always LOVED this song, but something Inside hit me very hard when Kurt told me that it fit my voice perfectly. (A bit of backstory for this...I love the role Gabe! If I could play any character on Broadway It would be him. More so than Tony or Roger or Fiero.) Because not only do you have to have a great voice to pull this off, the guys cast as Gabe are the type of guy i long to be soooo badly. These guys are PERFECT! Great voices, Great dance ability and physically flawless. (The guy comes out without a shirt in the first song and the women (and many guys) are hanging off of his every word. ) He is everything I have never been able to be. But when he came out to sing I'm Alive, I had a much different experience than I'd ever had and it's so hard to explain. It was like an outer body experience. I was on stage singing. but not me...him. I don't know if that makes any sense, but I was looking out from him and just singing and rocking that song. I felt a little bit of what the guy on stage was feeling, and it was beyond compare.
It sounds weird but I felt it and it was like I was completely rediscovering why I started doing this in the first place, and really understanding how much I want this. With every bone in my body and with every moment of everyday. I need to make it happen, and It's beyond wanting food or wanting a girlfriend or wanting to be somebody else. It was beyond all the things that have given me heartache or strife in high school. It's beyond manic depression it's beyond anything else. It will be mine, I'm sure of it.

Attended Performance: A Little Night Music
Date:1/1/11
Performers: Bernadette Peters, Elaine Stricht, Stephen Buntrock
Venue: Walter Kerr Theatre
What did you enjoy most:
Bernadette Peters could not have been more Perfect. Her performance of Send In the Clowns had me balling like a child! For the rest of my trip, every other show will be sub par
Observations and Notices:
Once again I have to state that Bernadette Peters' performance was flawless. Elaine Stricht was also spectacular, however I found it odd that she spoke liaisons rather than singing it, but she is such an amazing actress that none of it felt awkward and she pulled it off very well. Hunter Ryan Herdlicka who played Henrik was quite good, and his cello "playing" was believable, even though it didn't really sound like it was coming from him.

I vocalized and warm up. most of the stuff that I do with kurt I did although I was quite sick
4:40-4:48 (8min)
Repertoire-
I'm Alive- Next to Normal
Later- A Little Night Music
Johnny One Note
4:48-5:20 (22min)
Succes:
I got my voice good and warm today after not having sung in a couple weeks being sick
Areas for Improvement :
I am still quite sick so I was cracking all over. I had all the notes but none of them sounded good and i cant hold pitches well
Notes:
Best thing to do is to just get de-congested!

"HAPPY NEEEEEeewwwwww......"
The day: New Years Day, The Place: NEW YORK! I just spent new years eve in NYC!!!!! talk about achieving lifetime goals right?
Speaking of goals, today is the day where millions of people world wide promise to make themselves better on the inside and out and make promises to change some aspect of their life, presumably for the better. Aah the fresh smell of New Years resolutions in the morning! So since this whole 30 day challenge is about change, what better to do than to announce my new years resolution with you kind folks?
I AM GOING TO LOOSE WEIGHT!!!! :) Easier said than done. remember that whole thing in the previous posting about being really insecure about myself? well here it is. The big insecurity. This is my biggest set back. I'm fat. I have been struggling with this my entire life, and, though true I've won a few battles, over all I've been loosing...or should I say gaining. And to some people I know, I'm sure I've been sounding like a broken record lately, truth is I've barely started being able to talk about it now. Its the biggest negative element in my life and its even really hard for me just to type these words. And as I begin to more fully understand the severity of my problem, especially in this line of business, the worse i get at managing it. And though I'm not exactly like Peter Griffin, I'm still big enough put me off leading man and into character actor, which is my biggest fear.
So here's the place. My mecca. I'll start here and I'll find myself that drive and confidence to carry myself back under the 200 mark on my scale and on to the stage doing the roles I dream about. So to 201, prepare to be dominated!!!!
